Nanoparticle characterisation (NanoSight)

The NanoSight NS500 Instrument provides an easy-to-use, reproducible platform for specific and general nanoparticle characterization.

With the NS500 you can analyze the presence, size distribution, concentration and fluorescence of all types of nanoparticles from 10nm to 2000nm.

Samples are introduced into the viewing chamber using the on-board fluidics capability. The on-screen pump control allows for automatic sample handling, including loading, washing and dilution. The computer-controlled motorized optical stage enables rapid relocation and refocusing of the sample and sample temperature is fully programmable through the NTA Software Suite.

The NS500 is proven with most nanoparticle classes down to 10nm (dependent upon particle type) dispersed in a wide range of solvents, for example:

  • Microvesicles and exosomes
  • Pharmaceutical nanoparticles - liposomes
  • Viruses
  • Carbon nanotubes (multi-walled)
  • Colloidal suspensions and polymer nanoparticles
  •  Nanotoxicology studies

Bio-Plex suspension array system

The Bio-Plex 200 system is a suspension array system which offers protein and nucleic acid researchers with a reliable multiplex assay solution that permits the analysis of up to 100 biomolecules in a single sample. Benefits are short assay time (3-4 hours), low sample volume (50ul) and better sensitivity and dynamic range compared to ELISA.

A number of pre-mixed magnetic bead-based assays are available from Bio-Rad and provide robust and reproducible measurement of proteins involved in a broad range of research areas including:

  • Cancer
  • Immunology/Inflammation
  • Cell Signalling
  • Kidney Toxicology
  • Metabolic

Live cell imaging and cellular assays (IncuCyte)

The Essen IncuCyte is an incubator microscope system for live cell imaging and cellular assays. The system allows time lapse live cell imaging of cells in a variety of vessels, including dishes, tissue culture plates, and multi-well chambers. Images can be reviewed and analyzed from a networked remote computer without opening the incubator or disturbing the cells.

The system is especially suited for monitoring cell lines (cell growth, transgene expression, cell migration), and for high content assay development. The analysis software suite includes validated assays for cell migration, scratch wound assay, apoptosis, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, reporter gene expression, and more.

The system includes:

  • 10x Nikon objectives
  • Enhanced phase contrast and GFP fluorescence
  • 30 TB data server
  • Incucyte image viewing and analysis software. Includes many validated assays.

Accepts micro-plates (96, 48, 24, 12, and 6 well), culture flasks (T25, T75, T175), dishes (35mm and 90mm), and slide chambers.

High throughput sample preparation using robotics

The Hamilton STAR automated liquid handling system is an open platform that can be set up to perform just about any liquid handling task you require. It uses air displacement pipetting technology and our workstation includes 8 pipette channels with the option to upgrade to a 96-channel head in future.

Our setup also currently includes:

  • two gripper options for moving microtitre plates between positions,
  • a vacuum manifold for filter plates, and
  • two heated shakers.

This system can be upgraded in future to include such options as a HEPA-filter hood, centrifuge, and evaporator; with these options the entire sample preparation process can be automated for mass spectrometry.

The advantage of using robotics for routine sample preparation goes beyond the time it frees up for you to do other tasks, it also enables much greater accuracy and precision – and opens up options such as the use of 384-well plates.

Dissolved Oxygen Probe

The NeoFox Sport handheld fluorescence-based optical oxygen sensing system can be used to measure dissolved and gaseous oxygen pressure. The NeoFox Sport oxygen sensor includes a phase fluorometer, an onboard microprocessor with low-power OLED display, a user interface and a battery pack for convenient lab use.

The user interface allows you to set single- or multi-point calibration and display oxygen readings in percent of oxygen, partial pressure, moles per liter and more. Unlike polarographic and galvanic oxygen meters, the NeoFox Sport sensor is immune to environmental changes in pH, salinity and ionic strength. Plus, NeoFox Sport eliminates the need for frequent calibration. It is suitable for checking the oxygen level in your incubator or even how much is dissolved in your media.

Gallios Flow Cytometer

The Gallios is known for its' cutting edge technology and proven performance. This instrument has fantastic detection capabilities, allowing users to visualise particles down to 0.404mm in diameter. The sensitivity and resolution of the Gallios means it can detect a variety of dyes and wavelengths. It has a customised forward scatter so users will achieve an accurate size measurement. User friendly software and fast, accurate processing allows researchers to conduct experiments efficiently.

Absorbance with High Speed Monochromator

Corbett RotorGene 6000 Real-Time PCR Instrument

The design simplicity of the RotorGene 6000 ensures maintenance is kept to a minimum, so users can focus on their research rather than waste time on the upkeep of their instrument. Air-driven heating and cooling allows for fast reactions. Greater sample-to-sample variation can also be observed. LI-COR Odyssey Infrared Imaging System

This instrument accommodates a variety of applications, including:

Users attain clear and accurate data, as there is no loss of weak bands due to overexposure. Multiplex detection enables simultaneous two-colour target analysis and eliminates error. Direct detection means that no film, darkroom or messy substrates are necessary.

Xenogen IVIS Spectrum Invivo and Invitro Optical Imaging System

Used to monitor disease progression, cell trafficking and gene expression patterns in living animals, the Xenogen is the most versatile and advanced in vivo imaging system available. This instrument features advanced fluorescence and bioluminescence imaging. Spectral unmixing tools allow the user to separate signals from multiple fluorescent reporters within the same animal.

Kodak Digital X-Ray Specimen 4000 Pro System

More than 65 000 levels of grayscale resolution allows for accurate x-ray density measurement. The fully automated lens and filter systems available in this instrument together with its high resolution make it the best digital resolution available in cabinet x-ray systems.

Zeiss LSM 710 Confocal with Live Cell Imaging Module

With excellent sensitivity, this machine is used for cell imaging, single molecule analysis, and imaging minute structures (such as DNA). Offering capabilities beyond conventional imaging, the Confocal allows for Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) and Image Correlation Spectroscopy (RICS). Researchers can use up to ten dyes simultaneously enabling them to look deeper into cells and tissues (e.g. brain tissue).

Zeiss Axio Imager M1

MultiNA

The Shimadzu MCE-202 MultiNA  is a completely automated high-speed microchip-based electrophoresis system for analysis of nucleic acids.  Both quantitation and fragment size determinations of up to 108 samples are rapidly performed over a wide dynamic range in a single analysis.
