Dr Hosam Mamoon Zowawi is interested in hospital-acquired infections, particularly those caused by antimicrobial resistant organisms. As a clinical microbiologist he recognized the need to develop more rapid diagnostic tools to aid initial medical management and implement infection control precautions. Hosam is also passionate about health promotion to raise public and medical awareness about antimicrobial resistance.

Research projects
Hosam is a member of the Infection and Immunity Theme, where he is studying antimicrobial resistant Gram-negative bacilli isolated from the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). This project is giving snapshots of the different resistance mechanisms associated with antibiotic resistant Gram-negative bacilli and helping to identify the predominate genotype spread in the GCC hospitals. Results generated from this project are highlighting the importance of initiating active ongoing surveillance on multidrug resistance organisms in the GCC states. This project would not be possible without the collaboration of several institutes in the GCC states including:
- King Saud bin AbdulAziz University for Health Science, National Guard-Health Affairs, Saudi Arabia
- GCC Centre for Infection Control, National Guard-Health Affairs, Saudi Arabia
- Department of Microbiology, Collage of Medicine, University of Dammam, Saudi Arabia
- Kuwait University, Kuwait
- Royal Hospital, Oman
- Samlaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain
- Hamad Medical Cooperation, Qatar
- Zaid Military Hospital, United Arab of Emirates
- Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital, Umm Al Quwain, United Arab Emirates
Another interesting part of Hosam's research focus is the development of innovative diagnostic methods to rapidly identify antibiotic resistant bacteria. Such applications will allow initial targeted treatments in the early stages of infection and will help to control the spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogens between patients.
Dr Zowawi is passionate to raise public and medical awareness about the latest in the issue of antimicrobial resistance. With the outstanding support of a multidisciplinary team, many campaigns and initiatives in different parts of the world have been launched to achieve this aim. Awareness messages are distributed by responsible science communication of published research in traditional media, effective distribution and pubic engagement through social media platforms, presenting in public events, and creating multimedia tools to raise AMR awareness.
His passion to combat antimicrobial resistance, and appreciation for multidisciplinary collaboration has stimulated him to join scientific expeditions to explore caves. He believes that caves will provide valuable understanding about the evolution of antimicrobial resistance and might harbor novel chemical compounds to tackle resistant pathogens.
These projects (Surveillance, Rapid diagnostics, and Educaiton) are in alignment with the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance addressed by The World Health Organization.
