Researcher biography
Dr Adam Irwin is a NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow and conjoint Senior Lecturer in paediatric infectious disease at The University of Queensland and Queensland Children's Hospital. His research focuses on early recognition of invasive infections and sepsis, and optimal use of antimicrobials including the most appropriate treatment of healthcare-associated and antimicrobial resistant infections in children. He is the medical co-chair of the Queensland Paediatric Sepsis Program which was awarded the Global Sepsis Alliance award in 2020, and leads a national study of invasive Gram-negative infections in Australian children.
Adam studied at the University of Birmingham Medical School and completed training in Paediatric Infectious Disease and Immunology in London. He was awarded his PhD by the University of Liverpool Institute of Infection and Global Health in 2016. Prior to relocating to Queensland, he was secretary of the British Paediatric Allergy, Immunity and Infection Group.
